This is Davin's favorite. It looks like MC5 watching a "MC5" movie in a dark red theater?!?!
Remember that famous MC5 picture by LENI SINCLAIR where the WHITE PANTHER pins are stuck straight into the band's chest??? Here's a close-up with an MC5 button instead...
Another great one, maybe this one should have been picked??? Davin's old boss at the RECORD COLLECTOR (Warren Westfall, not to be confused with TIME STEREO's own WARN DEFEVER) told Davin a story about the time he saw MC5 open for CREAM at the GRANDE BALLROOM. ROB TYNER came out with a flag that said FREAKS and the crowd went nuts!!! Of course it would have been cooler if he had been wearing a WOLFMAN suit!!!
Here's a real regular one, using that famous photo by LENI SINCLAIR. Davin is usually against using material from another artist in his work, but that's what the METRO TIMES wanted. You see, most stencil artists simply take a famous image (usually a photo or clip-art) to KINKO'S, blow it up, make three or four copies, then they cut out the image and spray. Now it's "their" art??? The super famous and popular artist SHEPARD FAIREY/OBEY GIANT uses this technique, and some critics say that he relies too much on the stolen image. But it is possible to use other peoples material and make a great stencil painting, see some of DION FISCHER'S examples HERE. As you may have noticed, Davin uses only original images in his work!!! OOP'S, except for these...
Here's a sketch using a hand from THE SIMPSONS (?) mixed with the JOE LOUIS fist sculpture here in Detroit.
Here's the FREAKS WOLF "sketch". The FREAKS wasn't added yet, it came soon after this, it was never intended to be a flag of surrender.
The finished fist. It's not hard to figure out why this one wasn't picked.
This one is great, it has some of Leni's famous photo but dosen't completely rely on it. It got rejected.
There had to be one with weed in it, but this got rejected too.
OOP'S, another green one. This is one of the worst ones, it stinks!!! Maybe for a bootleg t-shirt...
I like the simple ones.
This is a tracing of the famous photo by LENI SINCLAIR, turned into an American flag. It almost made it!!!
MC5 were all glammed-out and loved "OLD GLORY" so here's a platform-shoe-tribute to both. JACK WHITE and THE WHITE STRIPES wrecked this one for Davin.
Here's the one they almost picked!!! It's not even a painting, it's just a scan of one of the stencils that Davin used!!! It's just a xerox of Leni's picture with a hole in it...
Davin dosen't want you to see this. He gave up on this one before he even finished MIKE DAVIS.
Here's a stencil gone bad. It slipped!!!
